Applicants should be eager to apply excellent professional and interpersonal skills to manage the serials expertise within the Collection Development and Acquisitions Department. The successful candidate will manage a variety of serials acquisitions operations, especially related to electronic resources, for the University of Oregon Libraries. The University of Oregon is an ARL library serving more than 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 760 full-time and 430 part-time faculty members. Its 2.4 million-volume collection serves as an important research facility for scholars throughout the Northwest. The Libraries use the Innopac integrated system and are members of several consortia: the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA), BCR, and Orbis Cascade Alliance, for which the UO Libraries also serve as the host institution. The union catalog for the Alliance will soon contain the library holdings of 26 colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington. The Libraries' Collection Development and Acquisitions Department consists of 15 professional and career classified FTE. The Department's primary responsibility is selecting and acquiring library materials needed to support the educational and research mission of the University. Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Head of the Collection Development and Acquisitions Department, leads a busy, highly motivated unit responsible for administering the Libraries' serials acquisitions. Working with the departmental management team, administers the acquisitions of all serials, regardless of published format or acquisitions method. Serves as a resource person for the resolution of serial problems. Coordinates workflow enhancements to ensure and/or enhance efficient and effective access to print and electronic serials collections. Provides leadership in the evaluation and implementation of new technology related to serials acquisitions processes. Supervises 5 FTE service-oriented staff and works closely with the Serials Specialist to provide oversight for the major serials functions: check-in, claiming, receipt. As a supervisor, will write and maintain documentation, oversee staff training, and evaluate performance. In collaboration with the department head, subject specialists, and other library units, facilitates the purchase and licensing of electronic resources in a variety of formats. Coordinates the acquisition of electronic journals by communicating with vendors and consortia, defining and tracking access or licensing options and technological requirements, and managing license negotiation and compliance. Communicates developments within the field of serials acquisitions. With department head, develops and implements initiatives to maneuver the Libraries through an increasingly complex serials environment. Depending on subject expertise and/or interest, will serve as a subject specialist to one or more academic departments for the purposes of collection development and library instruction. Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited MLS degree. Demonstrated knowledge of acquisitions and serials processing. Familiarity with the issues related to developing a serials collection: selection, licensing, budgeting, access. Experience with an automated catalog and microcomputer applications; excellent problem solving skills, and ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines. Strong commitment to enhancing service through teamwork and responsiveness to clients; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently and to collaborate effectively with staff at all levels and with people of culturally diverse backgrounds. Proven aptitude for leadership and supervision. Potential to excel in a dynamic academic library environment, displaying flexibility, initiative, creativity, and determination. Demonstrated capacity for professional growth and development. Preferred: Experience with acquisitions operations, especially serials functions, in an academic environment, or a similar large or complex library setting. Experience supervising full-time employees and/or student assistants. Experience with the OCLC and Innovative systems; experience working directly with applications of integrated library systems; bibliographic knowledge of at least one foreign language. Salary & Benefits: $33,000 minimum. Appointment beyond the minimum salary will depend upon qualifications, education, and experience. Librarians have faculty status and privileges, academic rank, and are non-tenure track, with fixed-term, renewable contracts (two or three years, depending on rank). Oregon offers a complete benefits package. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 15 hours per month, sick leave at 8 hours per month. Low staff tuition rates are available for employees and their dependents for continuing education anywhere in the Oregon University System. Staff members are encouraged to become active in state, regional and national associations. Partial funding and release time is provided for participation in conferences and other professional development opportunities. Oregon has no state sales tax.
