Jewel,

Our Library has a vast collection of bound newspapers, but we do
not bind the local daily newspapers any longer. The biggest factor was
space -- we simply ran out of room to store these large volumes. The
last time we bound the daily newspapers, they generally were bound two
weeks at a time. The cost was not that much, $8 I think. Microfilm is
definitely the best way to archive newspapers, despite the cost, because
of its ease of use and minimal storage space required. However, to me
its somewhat tragic that we no longer bind the newspapers because they
do provide the best copy from which to make reproductions. We have an
ongoing interest and use of the bound newspapers that we do have. A
local business used to use our bound newspapers to make professional
reproductions of front pages for anniversary and birthday gifts for
people. Local organizations and businesses, including the professional
sports teams and the newspapers themselves, have used our bound
newspapers for!
displays. You can't get color pictures from microfilm! I won't even
get into the hype provided by the book "Double Fold" that detailed the
destruction of old, bound newspapers. I know this is probably more than
you needed/wanted, but I thought I'd vent a little.

To get newspapers on microfilm is so expensive. I'm wondering if library
has their newspapers bound. If so, how many books does it take to do one
year?
