Subject: SCCTP trainers for Basic Serials
This message is being sent to multiple lists; please excuse the
duplication.
Dear Colleagues,
The Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP) has
developed five courses since its inception in 1998. The first course,
Basic Serials Cataloging, has been extremely successful and has been
given in numerous venues throughout North America. Many of the trainers
who have been giving Basic Serials are now also giving one or more of
the other SCCTP courses and a goal for 2003 is to train additional
trainers to give the Basic Serials course.
Two train-the-trainer sessions are being planned, to be held in Denver
and Atlanta, between July-December 2003. We are particularly looking for
trainers from the south, midwest, and western states, but will be happy
to have new trainers in all regions of the country. A separate
train-the-trainer session for Spanish speakers will be held in
conjunction with the Mexican Library Association meeting in May in
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Basic Serials is a two-day course with sessions on what is a serial,
original and copy cataloging, major/minor changes, and electronic
serials. It includes a PowerPoint presentation and exercises following
most of the sessions. A needs analysis is completed by course attendees
and forwarded to trainers prior to the class so that trainers can
determine which elements of the course to highlight. The course is
generally taught by a team of two trainers.
To be eligible, you must have 2 or more years of serials cataloging
experience, good speaking and training skills, and the support of your
institution to attend one of the train-the-trainer sessions. We ask
that trainers be willing to provide two workshops a year and hopefully
that your institution will give you time off for this purpose. All
costs associated with providing an SCCTP workshop are paid by the
sponsor of the training and, in most cases, you will be given an
honorarium. The only financial cost to your institution is the initial
train-the-trainer session. There is no fee; only the costs of travel,
lodging, etc.
I am writing at this point to get an initial sense of how many
catalogers are interested, in what regions of the country, as well as
the best time for such training. Based on this information, times will
be set and a formal call for trainers will be issued. At that time a
resume and references will be requested.
If you are interested, please respond directly to me (jhir@loc.gov)
with your name, email, phone, name of institution, and preferred
location and times (i.e., month or season). The train-the-trainer
sessions will be two full days and will include a training skills
component. If you would like further information, please feel free to
contact me or consult the SCCTP Web site at:
http://www.loc.gov/acq/conser/scctp.html. I hope you will want to be
part of this growing and dynamic group of trainers!
