Metadata Librarian
Cataloging Department
NCSU Libraries

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position
of Metadata Librarian, to explore and develop
current and emerging models for organizing information and resources.
The Metadata Librarian will be based in the Cataloging
Department. The Cataloging Department
(http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/cataloging/cathome.htm) consists of 6
librarians, 16 staff, a
Computing Consultant, and a Libraries Fellow. The NCSU Libraries
catalogs over 45,000 titles and 100,000 volumes each
year, including books, serials, audio-visual software, and e-resources.
The NCSU Libraries is an Enhance library within OCLC
and has been an active participant in the CORC/Connexion Project, which
is used to guide electronic resources through the
selection process to the catalog. The Department has been at the center
of non-MARC database development work within the
Libraries.

Responsibilities
Leads metadata initiatives for the NCSU Libraries. With the metadata
architect, defines metadata needs and solutions that
ensure user-centered access to resources. Provides expertise for
development projects that utilize XML, EAD, FGDC, Dublin
Core, and other standards. Participates in non-MARC text, spatial and
numeric, and image database projects. Coordinates
non-MARC metadata initiatives within the Cataloging Department. Performs
some original cataloging, and participates in staff
training and development. Has a key role in planning and implementing
information retrieval systems, including the current
implementation of the next-generation integrated library system (Sirsi)
and MetaStar Enterprise software. Participates in
department and library planning, serves on library-wide committees, task
forces, and teams. NCSU Librarians are expected to
be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field.
Reports to the Assistant Head of Cataloging.

Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in library or
information science. Experience with metadata
and emerging standards, such as XML and EAD, demonstrated in graduate
coursework and/or practical experience..
Experience with relational databases. Ability to work effectively
independently and in teams, and to provide leadership.
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly,
knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing. Evidence of
ability for ongoing professional development and contribution.
Preferred: Two years relevant professional experience

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers highly competitive salaries in recognition of
applicable education and experience, not less than $43,000 for
a candidate who meets required and preferred qualifications; minimum of
$40,000 for a candidate meeting the required
qualifications. Librarians have academic status without tenure or rank.
Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave;
State of NC comprehensive major medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF,
or other retirement options. Additional and
optional dental, life, disability, deferred compensation, and legal
plans are available. Tuition waiver program for all campuses of
The University of North Carolina is available. Relocation allowance.
