Er created a "recreational reading" shelf and put them there. What
happens after that, we couldn't care less.

Theresa, we just put them on a shelf near the lobby - when a new one comes
in, we just discard the old one. They're not cataloged.

We have a reading area with the current issues of the more popular
magazines. Most are checked in, and shelved in the stacks when the next
issue arrives. But we don't check the freebies in, nor do we have bib
records for them. We just put them on the reading area display shelves, and
discard them when the next issue arrives. Since there's no record in the
ILS, this relies on the memory and diligence of staff to make it work.

After pondering this question for many years I have finally hit on a solution that
works (at least for me). I put a very large bright orange dot in the upper left
hand corner of each gift subscription and they are shelved in a separate section
of serials. They are not catalogued and as a new issue comes in I discard the
previous issue. In this way they are available for reading but are not checked in
or catalogued. I don't know about you but I am currently receiving 25+ copies of
GQ !!!!! which I promptly consign to the open shelf in the post office. They are
usually gone within an hour! (Could have something to do with the fact that we
are an all-women's college!) Hope this helps.

***We've had so much experience with these coming for a few months & then petering out, I've gotten really hard-nosed about them, and don't even think about cataloging them until they've been coming over a year.

***IME, it's been an Ebsco thing (although deeply buried in their enterprises, and most people are not aware of the connection) and claiming, etc. was a nightmare. So we just stopped wasting time on them. In early 2000, a rep was out, having us choose the freebies. Of the 8 we selected, 3 came for several months and one, ESPN, is still arriving steadily (said with crossed fingers so as not to temp fate . . .)

***Our catalogers have better things to do.

We have an area with miscellaneous uncatalogued publications
which we have not ordered. Gift subscriptions go there. Then if we
see people are trying to check these items out, I think about
ordering them. Mostly we just keep the three most current issues
and throw out the older issues.
