North Carolina State University Libraries SERIALS LIBRARIAN Vacancy Announcement Entry level Between the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the shores of the Outer Banks lies North Carolina's Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. In the past seven years, the NCSU Libraries has made an unprecedented rise through the ranks of the Association of Research Libraries to its current position of 32nd among the 113 university member libraries. The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Serials Librarian. Based in Acquisitions, this position will lead the Libraries in acquiring scholarly journals, monographic series, and other standing orders in print and digital formats to support the research, teaching, and extension programs of the university. Five million dollars of the NCSU Libraries' current collections budget (approximately $8 million) is directed to serials resources. The Libraries maintains 37,000 subscriptions. The Acquisitions Department consists of 3 librarians, 17 staff, a Computing Consultant, and a Libraries Fellow. . The Libraries acquires and processes all serials centrally with record maintenance currently on the DRA online system. Implementation of Sirsi Unicorn is scheduled for early 2003. Responsibilities Plans, coordinates, evaluates, and manages the Libraries' serials acquisitions programs in a bimodal environment of print and digital library resources. Supervises 7 staff members. Contributes to the overall management of the department. Develops and analyzes statistical and management reports for the department and the Libraries. Formulates strategic plans for an increasingly digital serials environment. Collaborates with colleagues to facilitate the licensing of digital resources, to coordinate the tracking of digital resources, and to ensure effective access to all serials resources. Coordinates processing of the federal and state government documents programs. Works with counterparts in the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) to further historically strong cooperative programs. Serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. Librarians at NCSU Libraries are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Head of Acquisitions. Qualifications Required: ALA-accredited MLS. Demonstrated knowledge of the serials industry, serials publishing trends, and contracts and licensing issues. Excellent oral, written, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work independently and in teams. Preferred: Experience with serials in an academic library collection. Supervisory experience strongly preferred. The NCSU Libraries is the lead server site for NC LIVE (North Carolina LIbraries for Virtual Education), a multi-type library initiative, making digital resources accessible to the citizens of North Carolina. The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, the Coalition for Networked Information, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, the Council for Library and Information Resources, and the Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University and North Carolina State University form the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined resources of more than 13 million volumes, and collections budgets totaling more than $29 million. Salary and Benefits The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, not less than $36,000 for this position. Librarians have academic status without tenure or rank. Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC comprehensive major medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options.
