Subject: check in/out of periodicals

Hi,

I'm wondering how other academic libraries handle control of periodicals
that are not checked in/out through a computer system.  our periodicals
are closed stacks and are not barcoded, therefore, the checking out and
checking in is done manually.  I need to change our procedures, but
without having to barcode every single periodical.
How do other libraries handle a manual checking in and out?

Any ideas, suggestions are welcome.
