The University of Hartford Libraries seeks a Head of Technical Services to
lead and supervise a department composed of monographic and serials units.
The successful candidate will establish departmental priorities and
procedures to ensure the expeditious acquisition and thorough bibliographic
control of materials. Duties: Administers budget for Technical Services. In
conjunction with Asst. Head of Allen Library, develops, maintains, and
monitors system-wide cataloging policies according to national standards.
Performs original and complex copy cataloging for a variety of formats,
including digital objects. Acts as primary liaison to OCLC and its regional
affiliate, NELINET, as well as maintains productive relationships with
cataloging, serials and acquisitions vendors. Identifies and participates
in cooperative and consortial arrangements beneficial to the University
Libraries. Creates and maintains acquisitions fund lines, and through the
collection of usage data and preparation of statistical reports advises the
director on matters related to serials budgeting. Serves as member of the
Library Council and represents the Libraries on various internal and
external committees. As a member of the Collection Development Committee,
advises on the status of acquisition funds and provides regular reports on
expenditures. Forms cooperative relationships with faculty to determine
curricular needs and serves as a subject selector. Attends conferences and
meetings to stay current with the latest developments and participates in
relevant professional organizations.

Requirements: Master's degree in Library Science, with at least three years
of professional experience in a technical services department in an
academic setting. Knowledge of serials control, acquisitions and cataloging
according to established standards (MARC, LC, AACR2) and experience with
integrated library systems. Must be able to lift and move 30 lbs.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a manager. Must possess strong
interpersonal, organization and communication skills, and the ability to
work with diverse groups.
