Publication delayed journals Anne Carroll Bunting 18 Jul 2002 16:30 UTC

When times are hard and money is tight, we look for ways to cut our journal titles which have been cut many times but the prices keep going up. When we get to the bare bones, it seems there is another way to select the titles to cancel. We have noticed a number of titles that have never published their 2002 issues and it is July. These are the ones that are in the $1500+ bracket. The inexpensive titles seem to publish. It seems that most of these that are behind are society publications.

I am particularly looking at two now. Histochemical Journal v.33 no. 9/10 Sept/Oct 2001 came May 3, 2002. We have not received v.33 no. 11/12 Nov/Sept 2001 or any of 2002. I asked about getting our money back for 2002 and our jobber told me it is a noncancellable title and the publisher Kluwer Academic would not give us a refund.

Cytogenetic and Genome Research (formerly Cytogenetics & Cell Genetics) was a title change for 2002. So far $2520 and it has not been published the middle of July. It is not in OCLC. It is a Karger publication but I notice on their web page the Society is looking for members. Once again this is supposed to be a noncancellable title. So we don't have the journal or our money. If it is never published will they refund. I doubt it. 2002 might be v.95 #1-16 in one issue.

Is it the publishers or the editors who are making life hard and expensive for us. I noticed some messages about General Pharmacology issuing an index and calling it the journal volume for the year for the high price of the journal. Thank goodness I cancelled that beginning 2001 because it was behind.
