Subject: reflecting canceled status for journals in catalog

Hi all,

When dealing with canceled journal titles, do libraries put a line or
comment in the record indicating the canceled status? If so, what kind
of language is used? We recently canceled a number of titles, and I'd
like to put a comment in the public catalog indicating that status for
our patrons.

Thanks!

Stefanie

Stefanie:

We do not put a note on the public record that a title has been
cancelled. Our patrons seem to want to know if we have the journal /
volume / issue they need and don't really care if it has been cancelled.

If we had such notes, the patron would have to scroll down the record to
find it, and we have seen few such occurrences. They go directly from
the biblilographic information to the item list.

Sincerely,

John Lucas

Re: How do we reflect the cancelled status for journals in our catalog?

We use epixtech's HORIZON system, which provides a note in the public
catalog in the copy record. If back issues are kept, our practice is to
state in this note that the title has been cancelled, specifying the last
volume/number purchased and the date.

The DRA system has a statement you can generate that states "Not
currently received." That's the one we use at the University of Alaska
Anchorage Consortium Libary when we have cancelled a journal.
