Hi Karen-
We bind anything less than 1.5 cm and is kept for an extended period of time
(more than 10 years). We do not bind anything that is available on JSTOR or
Project Muse. We do bind some heavily used periodicals like BMJ, Fortune,
Forbes etc that are not kept forever but are used quite often.
We re-evaluated binding about a year ago when JESTER and Project Muse were
introduced to our library and have cut our binging budget about 15%. We
still keep the periodicals we just do not bind them.

Hope this helps!

Subject: binding criteria

Hello,
I am trying to standardize how I we bind our periodicals here, and I
wondered if libraries out there could tell me what criteria they use to
choose what to bind: everything? professional journals? most-used journals?
titles a professor would like to see bound? those vulnerable to theft?
titles over a certain price?. Do you bind the titles that you may get in
print but are commonly available on aggregated databases? Any ideas are
welcome, so I get a feel for what is out there.

Thanks!

***We bind those that tend to be messiest, damaged and vulnerable to theft
(ie, most-used), of academic merit and not available on full-text databases
(JSTOR).
