Susanna Flodin awarded Wiley First Step Award
The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) is
pleased to announce that Susanna Flodin, Technical Services Librarians at
Oregon Institute of Technology, has been awarded the First Step Award, a
Wiley Professional Development Grant, for 2002.
Ms. Flodin best exhibited the desire and need to provide librarians new to
the serials field with the opportunity to broaden their perspective and to
encourage their professional development by attending the American Library
Association Annual Conference.
Ms. Flodin was originally hired at OIT as the Catalog Librarian directly
after obtaining her graduate library degree. She quickly established herself
locally and regionally, having now been promoted to Manager of the Technical
Services area. In this position, she oversees acquisitions, serials and
government documents processing. And, as a true serialist multitasker-
she continues to serve as the Catalog Librarian to OIT.
Ms. Flodin currently serves on 2 ORBIS Consortium Committees, serves on
the Online Northwest Planning Team, an annual conference to promote
innovation and technology in libraries, is a member of the Learning
Resources Commission and the Americans with Disabilities Commission
on OITs campus. While a graduate student, Ms. Flodin co-authored a
journal article published in Library and Archival Security.
Susanna has stated that she looks forward to contributing to ALA and
the ALCTS Serials Section in particular. She is eager to network and
identify mentors in the serials field so she can become a better
serialist. Due to continuing budgetary problems in Oregon, Ms. Flodin
has had and continues to have, no opportunities to attend ALA or any
other conference without financial help. The First Step Award will
give her that opportunity.
Susanna is currently Manager of Technical Services at Oregon Institute
of Technology in Klamath Falls, Oregon. She received her M.L.I.S from
University of British Columbia in 1999 and her B.S in Psychology in
1994 from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. She
held a Graduate Assistantship as well as several temporary staff
positions in libraries during her library studies.
Presented by the Serials Section, the grant of $1,500 donated by
John Wiley & Sons, Inc. is applicable toward round trip transportation,
lodging, registration fees, and related expenses providing librarians
new to the serials field the opportunity to broaden their perspectives
and to encourage professional development by attending ALA conferences
and participating in ALCTS Serials Section activities.
The award will be presented on June 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the ALCTS
Membership Meeting and President's Program during the 2002 American
Library Association Annual Conference in Atlanta, GA.
