                 SERIALS AND ELECTRONIC RESOURCES CATALOGER

The University of California, Santa Barbara, one of ten campuses of the
University of California system, is seeking a Serials and Electronic
Resources Cataloger.  The successful candidate must be innovative,
creative, energetic, and self motivated.  The University is ranked as a
category 1 research university by the Carnegie Commission, and is an
elected member of the Association of American Universities.  The library
memberships include ARL, CRL, and the OCLC.  The library is also a
participant in the California Digital Library, and the Library of
California.  The library collections include over two million volumes,
government documents, microforms, sophisticated electronic resources,
and
numerous Special Collections.

Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are
professional
academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per
month
and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.  The University has an
excellent retirement system, which is coordinated with Social Security.
A
selection of group health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans are
offered by the University.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Reporting to the Head, Serials Department the
incumbent
will assume responsibility for the bibliographic control and maintenance
of serials and electronic resources.  Contributes original cataloging
for
serials and electronic formats to local, state, and national databases.
Performs  complex copy cataloging for serials and electronic resources.
Participates in the management of the Serials Department.  Supervise,
train and evaluate support staff assigned to the Unit.

Plans, develops, and implements local policies and procedures for
cataloging and linking serials in all formats.  Responsible for the
establishment and maintenance of holding statements for serials and
electronic resources.

He/she works in a team environment across technical and public services
departments to facilitate identification and access to electronic
resources.  Provides expertise and serves as a consultant for the
formulation of uniform standards related to user access to electronic
resources.  Coordinates the integration of bibliographic records from
the
California Digital Library's Shared Cataloging Program into the UCSB
online catalog.

Participates in UC system-wide technical services initiatives and serves
on the UCSB original catalogers group and other library committees as
appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:  ALA accredited MLS with course work in cataloging and
technical services.  Cataloging or cataloging-related experience,
preferably in a research library, and a working knowledge of serials and
electronic resources.  Demonstrated knowledge of current cataloging
rules
and standards including AACR2rev, LCRI, LCSH, MARC21 formats and Library
of Congress classification system.  Experience with an integrated
library
system and with online bibliographic utilities such as OCLC and RLIN.

Demonstrated problem solving skills, ability to prioritize assignments
and
an aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail.
Interest in current trends and developments in cataloging, metadata
standards and information retrieval.   Demonstrated initiative and
flexibility. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication
skills with the ability to work independently and in a culturally
diverse
team environment.   Supervisory experience is highly desirable.

Salary commensurate with qualifications, minimum $37,920.  Consideration
