We use a barcode scanner to read the issn number on issues.  It takes
you right into the check in record for that journal.   Apparently at
some point, (perhaps some are doing this already) you will be able to
scan in all information (vol., issue number)about an issue, because this
is a part of the ISSN number of  many journals already.
