CALL FOR CSLS PAPERS AND POST CONFERENCE TOURS PARTICIPANTS IN CHINA

These Conference and Preconferences are sponsored by the China Society for
Library Science (CSLS).  An excellent opportunity to learn about Chinese
libraries and their digital library projects, knowledge management and
organization, and other projects in an electronic age. The Conference also
provides great tours for us to see the beautiful country in China.
Please submit your title and abstract to Sally Tseng by March 31, 2002.

Invitation Letter

It is necessary to obtain an invitation letter from the Organizing
Committee for your visa for business travel to China.  Please send Sally
Tseng, before April 15, 2002, by email:  sctseng@uci.edu, your name,
title, institution, address, telephone and fax numbers, and email address.
I shall request CSLS to send you an invitation letter to attend the
Conference.

A. CSLS Annual Conference, Xian, China, Shaanxi Provincial Library, July
26-28, 2002

Good News!  The deadline for sending me your CSLS Abstracts has been
extended to March 31, 2002. Full paper due to Sally Tseng is:  May 31,
2002. Thanks to CSLS.

Theme:  Knowledge at the Economic Age and the Trend in Library
Development. Topics are:

1.  Library and Intellectual Property after Joining WTO
2.  The Creation and Research of Digital Library
3.  The Building of Library Information Resources
4.  Model of Library Services and Users' Needs
5.  Library and Social Responsibility and Function
6.  Library Management and Innovation
7.  Library School Curricula and New Development

For the first time, Papers from CALA Delegates can compete with Chinese
librarians for the CSLS Best Papers of the Year Awards.  Please submit
US$10 as evaluation and processing fee.  Papers will not be considered if
the evaluation fee is not included.  Selected authors will be awarded a
certificate and a copy of the Proceedings.

B.   2002 CSLS Preconference and Workshop, Xian, July 23-25, 2002

Call for papers and trainers are CLOSED for:

1.  Preconference on Libraries in the United States, July 23-25, 2002
2.  SCCTP Electronic Serials Cataloging Workshop, July 23-25, 2002

Registration Fee:  US$180 (fee includes Conference package, meals during
the conference and one day tour)

Special Discount Registration Fee to CALA Members:

* CALA Members Who Join CALA Delegation is: US$150 per person

* CALA Delegate's spouse, relatives and friends who do not attend the
  Conference is:  US$80 per person (including three days meals and one day
  tour)

* Hotel:  US$40 per day (for a 2 beds room.  More information is available

Post Conference Library and Cultural Tour - Silk Road Tour: Xian, Urumqi,
Turpan, Dun Huang, Lanzhou.  The dates are from July 29 to August 5, 2002.
Before June 5, 2002, the fee is US$635 per person, including hotels,
meals, transportation and entrance tickets, except hotel not included for
July 29 and August 4-5, 2002.

The deadline for signing up for the tour is June 5, 2002.  I understand
that we need to prepay for the Tour because it is the busiest tourist
season.  The travel agent needs to purchase airlines and train tickets and
reserve hotels and make other arrangement for us in advance.

Itinerary for Silk Road Library Cultural Tour in China, July 29-August 5,
2002:

7/29 Xian: Bus tours to the Famen Temple and the Qianling Tomb. (You may
request to stay at the Xian Hotel by paying extra night).

7/30 Xian: Bus tours to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Shaanxi
Historical Museum Fly to Urumqi, Sinkiang.

7/31 Urumqi:  Bus tours to:  Heavenly Lake (Boat Cruise); Visit Southern
Mountain Pasture.  As guests inside the host's tent and taste the local
milk tea.

8/1 Urumqi/Turpan: Bus tours to the Flaming Mountains, Karez Well System,
Grape Valley.  After dinner, enjoy local Sinkiang Uighur Autonomous Region
Folksongs and dancing.  Board a night train for Liuyuan.

8/2 Liuyuan, Dun Huang: Bus tours to Dun Huang, Mogao Caves, Crescent Moon
Lake, Mingsha Sand Dune, Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves.

8/3 Dun Huang: Bus tour to Ja Yu Pass
 Board a train for Lanzhou after lunch.

8/4 Lanzhou: Bus tour to White Pagoda Hill and the Mother Statue of the
Yellow River. Fly to Xian in the afternoon.  (Hotel on your own
8/4-5/2002.  The travel agency may arrange hotel for those who need it or
you can make reservation at the Xian Hotel).

8/5 Xian: Bus tour to the Ancient City Wall.  Then, free activities.

This (eight) 8-day tour is $635 per person including hotels, meals,
transportation and entrance tickets.  (Need to pay extra for hotel on July
29 and August 4-5, 2002).
