Greetings! This is just a reminder to all about the upcoming NETSL
conference on April 12, with a fine array of speakers on a series of
vital
topics. Advance registration has been extended to Wednesday, April 3.
NETSL
conferences frequently sell out, so advance registration is advisable.
See
you there!
New England Technical Services Librarians (NETSL) announces the
program for our Spring 2002 Meeting: Something Old, Something New:
Looking
at Standards. The meeting will be held on Friday, April 12, 2002, at the
College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass.
The keynote speaker is Sally McCallum, (Network Development and
MARC
Standards Office, Library of Congress), addressing "The Metadata and
Markup
Explosion." After years of steady standardization on AACR and MARC 21,
the
library community is being enticed by the potential of lots of different
metadata schemes and markup techniques. Where are we going and how do
we
make choices? Ms. McCallum will explore the relationships, relevant
applications, and emerging directions for several prominent markup
methods,
from MARC to ONIX to Dublin Core.
Lynne Howarth (Faculty of Information Studies, University of
Toronto), is the afternoon speaker; her topic is "Making Sense of
Metadata:
Towards a Common Core for Bibliographic Control." With the proliferation
of
digitized resources accessible via Internet and Intranet knowledge
bases,
and a pressing need to develop more sophisticated tools for
identification
and retrieval of electronic resources, both general purpose and
domain-specific metadata schemes have assumed prominence. The IFLA
Working
Group on the Use of Metadata Schemes has been charged with (1)
determining a
metadata 'core record' which could be used by authors and/or publishers
of
electronic records to enhance resource discovery, and to provide, where
appropriate, elements for incorporation into bibliographic records, and
(2)
providing guidance/guidelines on the appropriate use of metadata records
and
bibliographic records in libraries. This presentation will describe
progress
on, and outputs from, each of these initiatives.
There will also be a choice of breakout sessions: 1) "XML
Basics",
by Norman Desmarais (Providence College); 2) "Workable Solutions with
Dewey
Classification", by Linda Tiernan Kepner (Peterborough Town Library,
Peterborough, N.H.); 3) "ONIX In-Depth," by Sam Dempsey (Informata.com),
and
4) "Adopting and Adapting: Metadata Standards in Harvard's Digital
Library
Initiative," by Robin Wendler (Harvard University Library). Birdie
MacLennan
(University of Vermont) will give a brief presentation during the lunch
period on the work of NASIG, the North American Serials Interest Group.
Advance registration is highly recommended for the NETSL Spring
Meeting. The registration form is available at

Treasurer Penny Schroeder at pschroed@bowdoin.edu with questions about
