In fact, my response to the original inquiry came as a result of
procedures at Boise State. We also keep all packaging material until
all items have been checked in. This helps get those errata notices
from the publishers as well as items mistakenly delivered to us. The
frustration of figuring out why you received an item - title change,
comes with title, sample, gratis subscription - can often be solved by
reviewing the packing material. Also with many journals going online,
the publisher often requires you enter info from the mailing label to
gain access to the online database (we also enter those subscription
numbers from the mailing label in an already existing database for
future use). It doesn't add much time to processing, just a large
drawer to place all the paper/plastic wrap. Once all items are checked
in, you can toss/recycle it.
