Thank you. ______________________________________________________________________ JSTOR Production Librarian � University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI Background JSTOR, an independent not-for-profit organization located in New York, NY, is a large-scale undertaking to convert and maintain digital versions of the backfiles of journals and develop access tools which allow both full text searching and indexed components within each issue. The University of Michigan is one of two host sites for the project. Local staff have responsibilities for preparing journal volumes for scanning (by an external vendor), developing indexing standards, maintaining and enhancing the search software/system, managing a quality control process for the digital content, and providing user support services to institutional sites. To date, JSTOR has converted over 9 million pages from 218 journal titles, and over 1,000 North American and international organizations have signed on as institutional participants. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities Research and Write Indexing Guidelines: Analyze large quantities of serial issues in order to assess and understand the intellectual structure of the serial publication and its degree of conformity with existing JSTOR specifications. Post results of initial analysis on World Wide Web meeting established deadlines and communicate results to production staff who will be applying documentation. Assess variations in the intellectual structure of the serial publication identified by production staff and incorporate additional instruction as needed into the final journal-specific guidelines. Respond to questions from scanning and indexing vendor regarding the implementation of these guidelines. Review sample files prepared by the vendor for correctness and communicate with the vendor regarding errors providing corrective instruction as needed. Work with other Production Librarians and Production Manager to track and analyze vendor indexing error patterns and propose remedial solutions. Review existing JSTOR indexing documentation and revise as necessary to support the appearance of new serial publication features. Meet established production deadlines and volume requirements each month, or more frequently, as needed. Draft Catalog Records: After analysis of the publication history and the printed and/or electronic issues, prepare cataloging records for serial publications in accordance with established JSTOR and AACRII practice. Release data to library community on appropriate timeframe and ensure ongoing catalog record accuracy. Work with User Services Librarians and other Production Librarians to resolve questions from the library community regarding catalog record contents. Alert Senior Production Librarian to the need to work with outside agencies to correct publisher errors in bibliographic data. Research Publication History Using bibliographic resources and the printed and/or electronic issues, research and analyze the publication history of scholarly serial publications tracking complex changes in title, publisher, issuance schedule and other features. Document the full range of published issues, including special issues, supplements, etc. Record research results in publication database. Miscellaneous Activities Work as part of Production Librarian team to maintain and update process documentation. Research and review new indexing problems (e.g. transliteration schemes) and propose solutions. Work on other projects as assigned. Required Qualifications * Masters in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution. * Minimum of 1-2 years experience (professional or pre-professional) in a library or other large information environment with detailed, time-sensitive processes. * Demonstrated experience with HTML/web page maintenance. * Demonstrated proficiency with standard MS Office applications. * Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment. * Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and with a high level of attention to detail. Desired Qualifications * Knowledge of serials. * Experience with AACRII cataloging procedures. * Experience using database software. * Experience with UNIX Salary, Benefits, and Rank $33,500 minimum. 24 days vacation per year, comprehensive health insurance, TIAA/CREF. The rank of the incumbent will be determined upon hiring but will most likely be Assistant or Associate Librarian. Librarians at the University of Michigan are non-tenured faculty members.
