JSTOR Production Librarian University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI

Background
JSTOR, an independent not-for-profit organization located in New York,
NY, is a large-scale undertaking to convert and maintain digital
versions of the backfiles of journals and develop access tools which
allow both full text searching and indexed components within each
issue. The University of Michigan is one of two host sites for the
project. Local staff have responsibilities for preparing journal
volumes for scanning (by an external vendor), developing indexing
standards, maintaining and enhancing the search software/system,
managing a quality control process for the digital content, and
providing user support services to institutional sites. To date, JSTOR
has converted over 9 million pages from 218 journal titles, and over
1,000 North American and international organizations have signed on as
institutional participants.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Research and Write Indexing Guidelines:
Analyze large quantities of serial issues in order to assess and
understand the intellectual structure of the serial publication and its
degree of conformity with existing JSTOR specifications. Post results
of initial analysis on World Wide Web meeting established deadlines and
communicate results to production staff who will be applying
documentation. Assess variations in the intellectual structure of the
serial publication identified by production staff and incorporate
additional instruction as needed into the final journal-specific
guidelines. Respond to questions from scanning and indexing vendor
regarding the implementation of these guidelines. Review sample files
prepared by the vendor for correctness and communicate with the vendor
regarding errors providing corrective instruction as needed. Work with
other Production Librarians and Production Manager to track and analyze
vendor indexing error patterns and propose remedial solutions. Review
existing JSTOR indexing documentation and revise as necessary to support
the appearance of new serial publication features. Meet established
production deadlines and volume requirements each month, or more
frequently, as needed.

Draft Catalog Records:
After analysis of the publication history and the printed and/or
electronic issues, prepare cataloging records for serial publications in
accordance with established JSTOR and AACRII practice. Release data to
library community on appropriate timeframe and ensure ongoing catalog
record accuracy. Work with User Services Librarians and other
Production Librarians to resolve questions from the library community
regarding catalog record contents. Alert Senior Production Librarian to
the need to work with outside agencies to correct publisher errors in
bibliographic data.

Research Publication History
Using bibliographic resources and the printed and/or electronic issues,
research and analyze the publication history of scholarly serial
publications tracking complex changes in title, publisher, issuance
schedule and other features. Document the full range of published
issues, including special issues, supplements, etc. Record research
results in publication database.

Miscellaneous Activities
Work as part of Production Librarian team to maintain and update process

as assigned.
