Here at Purchase College we do not security strip every magazine.  We
basically make a list of those titles that are more likely to become
"lost". For example we have a large art collection so those would
definitely be striped.  Also, some of our science journals are very
expensive so we would strip those.  Limited retention titles or "browsing"
titles, like Time, Newsweek, US News, we do not strip. At a university I
previously worked at, the journals were not in an open reading room, so
security stripping was really not an issue since students had to request
which journals they needed and leave an ID.  I hope this helps.
