POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Fordham University Library, Bronx, New York
(http://www.library.fordham.edu) is seeking to fill the position of
Serials librarian.
Under the direction of the Head of the Serials Department, to perform a
variety of tasks related to the acquisition, cataloging and management of
a large collection of serial publications in all formats, including
electronic resources.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Cataloging serial publications (periodicals and continuations) in all
formats, languages and subjects, using OCLC, AACR2, Marc records, LCSH and
LC classification. Handling all procedures necessitated by bibliographical
changes of serial publications (title and frequency changes, cessations,
splits and mergers, etc.) Creating and maintaining serial check-in and
holdings records in the DRA library system. Updating local Serials
Information Database (SID) which is utilized to produce printed Serials
List and Budget Reports. Assisting in tasks related to electronic
resources access (e-journals and databases), helping to maintain the
library's web-based list of electronic journals. Adding and updating
serial holdings (Local Data Records) in the OCLC Union Serials List.
Helping to identify, research and resolve complex serials cataloging,
acquisition and holdings problems; coordinating functions related to
serials management with other departments and campuses. Monitoring such
materials as updates to MARC formats, CONSER documents and e-mail
discussion lists pertaining to serials. Participating in special projects
or related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS
Master's degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited
institution, additional Master's degree is desirable. Experience in
serials management in a library or other relevant institution and proven
ability to work with this complex material. Propensity for very detailed
work, flexibility and problem solving skills, ability to communicate
effectively with the supervisor, library staff, publishers and vendors,
familiarity with developments in the sphere of electronic resources.
Ability to accept technological changes and work successfully in a
computerized environment. Previous cataloging experience (preferably using
OCLC and DRA library system), strong computer skills in PC applications
and the Internet. Working knowledge of Microsoft Access is very desirable.
