I am afraid that you will most likely have to look at each title
individually because the consideration is not really the frequency,
but the thickness of the issues and the quality of the paper stock.
The optimal size of your bound volume is around 2 inches, so that
will be one of your most important criteria. Thick weeklies barely
can be done every two months (New Yorker and Business Week),
whereas thin weeklies might be better at 3 to 4 or even 6 months.
The other consideration is the heaviness of the paper itself. Some
of the art journals and science journals use paper stock which is
particularly heavy, so I try to bind them together in smaller width
bound volumes (more like 1 1/2 inches). Have your titles been
bound before? If so, your assistant could peruse the shelves and
tell you what already has worked for each title. Your pull list could
then be developed based on what you know about each title: Time
binds every two months, Macleans every 4 months, Science News
every 6 months, etc. I also bind some heavily used titles and
some titles for which issues turn up missing, much thinner and
more frequently in hopes that we can preserve them better.

Barbara Lloyd
