CATALOG LIBRARIAN - DATABASE MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Coordinator for Bibliographic
Control and Electronic Resources Services, this position has
responsibility for database management and organization of
information through bibliographic control, liaison activities with
other services in the Libraries, and outreach in state, national and
international bibliographic networks.

The Catalog Librarian/Database Management Specialist examines
and designs workflows to improve access to information, with
emphasis on database management; defines policy for system
use and management of data with others; assures quality control of
the online catalogs; develops, coordinates, and maintains authority
control processes post-cataloging; coordinates work with vendors
in obtaining records and their import/export into the online
catalogs; develops specifications, analyzes and tests database
and loader requirements; creates customized reports of data in the
online catalogs; and collaborates with other library personnel/units
in defining and developing special projects.

The position provides technical assistance to the Database
Management Unit, including support for problem-solving related to
workflows, cataloging, and authority control; instructs staff in the
use of the automated library system Innopac; serves as liaison to
Marcive, Inc., LTI, Blackwell's Books Services, and integrated
library system groups in the Libraries; investigates and develops
applications for improving access to electronic resources;
participates in the planning, development and evaluation of
services; aids the Coordinator in operations as assigned or
requested; and prepares reports and communications.

Bibliographic Control and Electronic Resources Services is
comprised of faculty (3) and classified staff (12) in the Morgan
Library. The Service is organized into these units: Original
Cataloging, Joint Copy Cataloging, Database Management, and
Projects. The Service is responsible for the bibliographic control of
materials in a variety of formats and for applying organizational
techniques to new forms of information to enhance access for
users.  The Service builds and maintains the online catalogs and
authority files to support retrieval by users, employing utilities and
vendors in the provision of programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: ALA accredited MLS or equivalent;
experience using AACR2 and the MARC formats; knowledge of
authority control principles and procedures; experience in a large
library working directly with applications of integrated library
systems; an understanding of loaders and interfaces between
systems and the ability to write specifications; academic or
research library technical services experience; experience in
organizing electronic and digital resources; the ability to work
independently, in a team, or in a project-oriented environment;
evidence of excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
excellent leadership and collaboration skills; a demonstrated
commitment to innovative approaches for improving
operations and services of research libraries; and the ability to
meet tenure and promotion criteria. Desired: knowledge of
automated acquisitions; knowledge of one or more foreign
languages; experience with OCLC and INNOPAC; experience with
project management and intra-library collaboration.

RANK AND SALARY:  Twelve-month tenure track faculty
appointment with contract reviewed annually until tenure is granted.
 Salary minimum of $37,800.
