Re: Texts for serials beginner -recommendations Lisa Blackwell 04 Oct 2001 15:59 UTC

Kathy,
This is just my opinion, but I have yet to find a comprehensive text on
serials Librarianship that is current enough to be really useful. It has
been my experience that concentrating on the current journal literature is
the best way to really get a good "feel" for what is happening in the field.

Essential reading:

The Serials Librarian
Library Resources & Technical Services (LRTS)
Serials Review
Reference Services Review (RSR)
Library Collections, Acquisitions and Technical Services
Library Hi Tech
D-Lib Magazine http://www.dlib.org/dlib/september01/09contents.html

Listservs to monitor:

LIBLICENSE-L (liblicense-l@lists.yale.edu)
SERIALST http://www.uvm.edu/~bmaclenn/serialst.html
ARL-EJOURNAL@CNI.ORG: e-journal management
DIGLIB@INFOSERV.NLC-BNC.CA: digital libraries research
Electronic Resources in Libraries (ERIL) eril-subscribe@topica.com

I was once where you are and I now have a passion for working with serials.
Welcome to a fascinating field!

I would like to ask your recommendations for good, basic serials texts
for a beginning serials librarian (me). It should include licensing issues
and electronic resources.

        Thanks in anticipation of assistance.
