SERIALS LIBRARIAN
Law Library
Cumberland School of Law, Samford University
Birmingham, Alabama

Samford University Faculty-Staff position, non-tenure track.  A full-time,
twelve month position.

Qualifications:  REQUIRED: M.L.S. degree. Minimum of two years' technical
services experience.  Must possess exceptional organizational skills and a
strong service orientation.  Must have excellent oral and written
communications skills.  Must have the ability to establish and maintain
effective relationships with the library staff, faculty, students, University
contacts, and vendors.  DESIRABLE:  Experience or course work to demonstrate
proficiencies in cataloging, OCLC, AACR2rev, MARC formats; particularly USMARC
Format for Holdings Data, archival or records management, and preservation
methods.

Duties and Responsibilities:  Primarily responsible for managing procedures for
the processing of periodicals, looseleaf services, newspapers, newsletters, and
other continuations. Specific responsibilities include maintaining check-in and
holdings records, handling claiming processes, handling bindery and other
preservation procedures, compiling and up-dating holdings lists, providing
current awareness services for faculty and students, supervising the shelving
of new materials, and supervising the filing of microfiche.  Responsible for
organizing and processing of archival collection which consists of law school
publications and library manuscript collections.  Handles conservation and
storage of materials.  Uses the VTLS Serials Control and Cataloging systems and
OCLC.  Creates serial holdings and circulation item records in VTLS.  Maintains
knowledge of serial publications in print and electronic formats and indexing
sources.  Promotes the use of the serial collection and archives by preparing
research guides, bibliographies, and library newsletter articles.  Plans work
for and supervises one Law Library Assistant and one to two student library
assistants. Compiles statistics and prepares reports. Participates in
collection development and makes recommendations on purchases and
cancellations.  Participates in policy decisions, implements procedures, and
prepares manuals. Responsible for maintaining the inventory of equipment and
supplies used in serials and archival work.  Coordinates activities with
librarians in acquisitions, cataloging, computer services, and reference.
Participates with other librarians in assuming occasional reference duties.
