Electronic/Digital Resources Cataloging Librarian
The Pennsylvania State University Libraries seeks a creative and highly
motivated librarian to provide leadership and expertise for defining and
providing effective access to the Libraries' electronic and digital
resources.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the head of the Serials Department, the
successful candidate will be responsible for facilitating access to
electronic and digital resources through cataloging and application of
metadata. Make recommendations on types of cataloging/metadata required
for effective access to electronic and digital resources. Provide
leadership in the development of standards, policies and procedures across
Technical Services, with particular responsibility for electronic and
digital resources. Work cooperatively across departmental lines within
Technical Services and throughout the libraries to recommend and implement
standards, policies, procedures, and workflows. Participate in
national-level cooperative programs, such as NACO. Serve as a resource
person for faculty and staff throughout the libraries concerning
bibliographic access to library materials, with particular responsibility
for electronic and digital resources. Monitor and contribute to the
development of national standards regarding the bibliographic control of
electronic and digital resources. Provide leadership for the formulation
of policies regarding metadata standards, PURLs, the relationship of new
access systems to traditional catalogs, and linkages between various
access systems. Train Technical Services staff to catalog electronic and
digital resources. Coordinate and manage initiatives that provide access
to collections of electronic journals, images, electronic books,
electronic theses, data files and other electronic resources.
Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent degree;
minimum of two years of recent cataloging experience; knowledge of AACR2r,
LCSH, LC classification, and USMARC formats; experience in an automated
cataloging environment with a major bibliographic utility, preferably OCLC
or RLIN; familiarity with established and emerging metadata standards
(e.g. TEI, Dublin Core, XML) and initiatives to enhance access to
electronic resources (e.g. CORC); excellent oral and written communication
skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively. Preferred:
Minimum of 2 years of electronic resources and/or serials cataloging
experience in an academic library.
Salary and benefits: This is a tenure track faculty position. Evidence
of potential for tenure and promotion will be considered. The successful
candidate will be expected to be active in research, scholarship and
service as a faculty member at Penn State. Salary and rank commensurate
