TO ALL LIBRARIANS
The General Editors and the Chairman of the Editorial Committee of the
Glasgow Bulletin are delighted to inform all Librarians that the dispute
concerning the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies was resolved on 7 August 2001.
A Joint Public Statement has been issued from the Universities of Glasgow
and Liverpool, which we copy to you below.
Librarians will welcome the fact that all parties have requested from the
ISSN UK Centre at the British Library completely new and separate ISSN
numbers for both journals, and have requested that these new ISSNs be
allocated to the Glasgow and Liverpool Bulletins "on an even-handed basis",
to take effect from their Volume LXXIX, 2002 issues. This has been done in
order to end the confusion caused to librarians and other journal users
during the currency of the dispute.
Joint Statement from the Universities of Glasgow and Liverpool
Dispute concerning the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies
A dispute arose in 1995 concerning the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies. Since
1995 separate versions of a journal with this name have been edited and
published from the Universities of Liverpool and Glasgow.
Both versions trace their origins to the journal started by Edgar Allison
Peers in 1923, which was between 1923 and 1948 published under the name of
the Bulletin of Spanish Studies and from 1949 to 2001 under the name of the
Bulletin of Hispanic Studies.
All parties are pleased to announce that this dispute has been resolved
through a mutually satisfactory settlement, arrived at after detailed
discussions on 15 January 2001 and 7 August 2001, facilitated by mediation
procedures. In the best interests of Hispanic Studies, the following
agreement has been reached:
· During 2001 the two journals will continue to be published under the
title the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies.
· After 1 January 2002, in order to distinguish between the two journals,
the Glasgow publication will use the journals original title, the Bulletin
of Spanish Studies and the Liverpool publication will use the present title,
the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies.
· The inside cover of the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies will carry the
statement "This Bulletin has been published continuously from Liverpool
since its foundation by Edgar Allison Peers in 1923". The inside cover of
the Bulletin of Spanish Studies will carry the statement "This Bulletin has
been edited by Edgar Allison Peers and his successors since 1923".
· Each journal will assume a new cover design and new colours from 1
January 2002.
· Both journals will continue to serve the broad field of Hispanic
scholarship -- through publishing research articles and reviews on the
languages, literatures and civilizations of Spain, Portugal and Latin
America.
· From the January 2002 issue of their respective Volumes LXXIX, 2002, each
journal will continue to use the same volume numbering as has been used to
date based on an initial publication date of 1923.
· The parties will jointly request from the ISSN UK Centre at the British
Library a completely new separate ISSN for each journal. From 1 January
2002 both journals will cease to use the original ISSN Number (ISSN
0007-490X).
END OF THE JOINT PUBLIC STATEMENT
The Editors of the Glasgow Bulletin take this opportunity to inform
librarians in advance that the Bulletin at Glasgow is expanding and will be
published with increased frequency. From its Volume LXXIX 2002 issues the
Glasgow Bulletin of Spanish Studies (concerning "Hispanic Studies and
Researches on Spain, Portugal and Latin America") will appear 6 times per
year, in January, March, May, July, September and November. This
development, which allows more contributions to be published in each Volume
Year, will enable accepted articles to appear more quickly and ensure the
prompt availability of book reviews.
All librarians will, we believe, share our pleasure in the final settlement
of the dispute over the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies.
