Columbia University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the
position of Head, Serials & Electronic Acquisitions Services Department. We
seek an experienced serials or acquisitions librarian to manage the
department (1 Library Specialist, 9 support staff), which provides
acquisitions services for electronic resources, all non-depository serials
(ca. 30,000), monographic series, and other standing orders for 18 library
sites. Materials in all formats are included. Columbia University
Libraries processes serials in both a centralized and decentralized
manner. Orders, payments, holdings maintenance, and problem claiming are
handled centrally with a number of titles received centrally as well. Most
periodical check-in and binding preparation is performed in the
departmental libraries. All records are maintained in the Libraries online
system, CLIO.
Reporting to the Director, Technical Support & Acquisitions Division, the
Head of SEAS will be expected to administer and manage activities
pertaining to technical services aspects of serials acquisitions in all
formats, including vendor selection and performance. This includes
assigning areas of work, determining workflow and procedures, monitoring
quantity and quality of work, analyzing and resolving problems, developing
and using statistical and other management reports. The incumbent is
expected to handle problem resolution and to manage the check-in training
program for the departmental libraries. The Head of SEAS serves as
Columbia's primary expert in the methods of acquiring and processing
serials, monographic series, and other standing orders.
Columbia University Libraries is devoting an increasing portion of it $11
million budget to electronic materials. The incumbent will be expected to
work with peers and members of the Library Administration to streamline the
process for acquiring and providing access to electronic materials. This
will include working with the Library Systems Office, the Networked
Electronic Resources Librarian, vendors, publishers and other members of
various consortia to obtain the best terms and conditions available.
Requirements are: an accredited MLS, or equivalent relevant serials
experience; previous serials or acquisitions experience at a professional
level; knowledge of serials librarianship, bibliographic records, and
library automation; knowledge of business practices and the ability to
apply that knowledge to established fiscal procedures; ability to work in a
large, complex and changing library environment; effective written and oral
communication skills; managerial and analytical skills; sound judgment;
strong supervisory skills; working knowledge of one or more European
languages (preferably one Romance and one Germanic) including the ability
to understand general business terms. Experience with OCLC and/or RLIN,
and experience in a large research library, and familiarity with licensing
and Intellectual Property issues are desirable.
Salary ranges are: Librarian I: 40,600 - $50,750; Librarian II: $42,600 -
$57,510; Librarian III: $45,600 - $68,400. Excellent benefits include
