ELECTRONIC RESOURCES TECHNICAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The University of Iowa Libraries is seeking a
creative and energetic person to provide leadership in the acquisition
and
cataloging of electronic resources and the cataloging of serial
publications in all formats. The incumbent will coordinate the
acquisition
and cataloging of electronic resources, maintain business relationships
with vendors of electronic resources, assist in reviewing and managing
license information for electronic resources, and perform original
cataloging for serial publications in all formats. The incumbent will
also
monitor trends and maintain currency in emerging issues in electronic
resources cataloging, serials cataloging and metadata, and evaluate and
recommend new ways of organizing electronic resources. In addition, the
incumbent may supervise library assistants responsible for electronic
resources processing.
This position will provide leadership for the formulation of policies
related to access to electronic resources and the role of the OPAC in
providing coherent access to in-house and external electronic resources
including locally developed scholarly digital resources. The incumbent
will address issues related to topics such as metadata standards,
persistent identifiers for networked resources, record format and record

contents (MARC, SGML, Dublin Core, multiple versions) for digital
resources, the relationship of new access mechanisms to traditional
catalogs, and linkages among various access systems.
This position reports to the Head of the Serials Section.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school; ability to work
both
independently and as a team member on a variety of issues in a dynamic
environment; knowledge of AACR2r, LC subject headings and
classification,
and USMARC formats; interest in or experience with providing access to
electronic resources; strong communication and organizational skills;
aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail;
demonstrated problem-solving skills; flexibility; ability to prioritize
work to ensure that departmental and library goals are realized; ability
to
work effectively in a production-oriented environment; and a
demonstrated
commitment to professional growth and development.
Preferred: A minimum of one year of experience in serials cataloging
and/or
electronic resources in an academic or research library within the last
three years; supervisory/ management experience; demonstrated interest
in
the issues and standards related to metadata; recent experience with an
integrated library system and with OCLC and/or RLIN; and working
knowledge
of one or more foreign languages.
Salary and Appointment: Appointment will be made at the rank of
Librarian I
or Librarian II and salary will be based on relevant experience and
educational background and will be competitive with peer institutions.
The
salary range for this position is $26,410 - $48,325. The University of
