As a follow-up to Christie's message we, too, use Voyager and it
predicts
all seasons perfectly regardless of issue number.  Spring #1 is only
asking
you to designate whether the issues published for a calendar year are
Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.  Winter #1 designates Winter as the
first
season published in the calendar year (Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn).
After determining the appropriate one any issue number will work with
any
season (the Winter#1 issue could be "no. 3").

We have not yet implemented a predictive check-in system, but will later
this year.  We expect to use those codes (which are part of the MARC
format for holdings) and would hate to see the SICI eliminate them!  We
look so forward to the day we can wand in the SISAC barcode to check in
an
issue!

More and more ILS systems are (or will be in a year or so) fully
implementing the MARC21 Format for Holdings Data.  Instead of developing
this non-standard workaround, the systems vendor should be lobbied for
full implementation of the standard. I know this is easier said than
done,
but if the customers don't push for standards, we all lose.

Julia, you have my vote to keep the season codes.

We use Endeavor's system 'Voyager' and seasonal checkin works on it.  As
long as you start with Spring or Winter.  For some reason starting with
Summer or Autumn, it will predict as a quarterly but will not put a
season
with the Spring and Winter issues.  Very strange little bug.  But if you
start the pattern with the #1 issue in Spring or Winter it predicts
beautifully!  Just thought you would like to know.

Thanks to those who replied to my post regarding the problems with our
quarterly seasonal titles.  One respondent asked me to share with the
list and I'll summarize what I have learned.

The consensus is that seasonal check-in is "virtually useless".  All
those who responded simply check the issues in with v:n and an arbitrary
month to indicate the season.  And after much thought, I think that's
what we'll do, too.

Next month we're having vendors give demos and DRA will show us TAOS.
It will be interesting to see if seasonal check-in works on their new
product.
