Serials Librarian (Tenure-track)
Ferris State University, a national leader in career-oriented,
technological, and professional education, is currently recruiting for
the
position of Serials Librarian.
Responsibilities: New, tenure-track position designed to facilitate the
coordination of serials operations currently spread between
acquisitions,
cataloging, automation, and reference services. This position includes
managing and cataloging serials in a highly electronic, technologically
advanced environment, developing cataloging policies and procedures for
print and electronic journals, and collaborating with the web
development
team to apply database technologies and metadata standards to the
library's
web presence. Major priorities include providing access to serials in a
variety of formats, and maintaining the integrity of the serials
collection. Responsible for planning and directing day-to-day serials
operations, including fiscal control, ordering, check-in, claiming, and
processing activities; management of physical and virtual serials
collections; perform cataloging of serials in all formats including
e-journals; serve as the resource person for serials cataloging and
processing practices. Participate in collection development
decision-making relating to serials in all formats; some reference desk
coverage; appropriate university-wide and professional activities.
Qualifications:
Required: ALA-accredited masters degree in library or information
science;
knowledge of serials operations; cataloging experience; experience with
OCLC and an integrated library system. Must possess effective
communication, interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and
problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and as part of a
team; strong customer service orientation.
Preferred: Work experience in an academic library; experience in serials
cataloging, supervision, training, and Innovative Interfaces system;
additional graduate degree.
Salary and Benefits: $32,000-38,000 for a 12-month, tenure-track,
faculty
appointment with rank, plus an excellent benefits package valued at
approximately 36% of base salary. Comprehensive benefits are provided
(after applicable eligibility and accrual periods) including 20 days
vacation, two days personal leave, paid holidays, insurance (health,
dental, vision, life, disability), medical reimbursement account,
retirement system options, e.g., TIAA-CREF (with 12% university
contribution), tuition waiver, moving expenses, and generous support for
professional activities.
Serving close to 10,000 students, Ferris State University offers 120
academic programs in a diversity of disciplines, with graduate and
professional programs in optometry, pharmacy, criminal justice
administration, information systems management, and education. FLITE
(Ferris Library for Information, Technology, and Education), our new,
highly electronic, technologically advanced library facility, opened in
March. At 173,000 sq. ft. FLITE is three times the size of the former
library building and features a variety of public work and study spaces,
a
total seating capacity of 1,300, and computer connectivity for more than
1,000 users. The library recently migrated to the Innovative Interfaces
Millennium system.
Ferris's main campus is located in Big Rapids, Michigan, a city of
12,000
located on the picturesque Muskegon River, 55 miles north of Grand
Rapids
and within 220 miles of Detroit and Chicago. Nestled in the middle of
western Michigan's vacation heartland, this former logging community
offers
a variety of recreational opportunities, including canoeing, tubing, and
fishing on the Muskegon; biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing on the
