The Library serves over 23,000 undergraduates, 9,000 graduate students, and almost 1,500 faculty. Current collections include over 9 million volumes and over 56,000 current serial titles. Library facilities on the Berkeley campus include the Doe/Moffitt Library complex, The Bancroft Library, the East Asian Library and more than 20 additional libraries serving specialties and the professional schools. The Library is a member of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), and the Research Libraries Group (RLG). The Library is an active participant in the California Digital Library. The Library has a budget of $50 million, and employs over 440 FTE, including professional and para-professional staff, and more than 600 part-time students. The Technical Services Department is responsible for ordering, receiving, and providing access to the Library's collections. The department consists of six divisions: the Original Cataloging Division, the Copy Cataloging Division, the Serials/Documents Division, the Order Division, the Periodicals Check-in/Library Mail Services Division, and the Gifts and Exchange Division. The Original Cataloging Division of the Technical Services Department is responsible for the original cataloging of monographs, serials, microforms, audio-visual media and electronic resources in all languages, except Chinese, Japanese and Korean, for the collections of the Main Library and its branches. The Division is staffed by 8.5 FTE original catalogers. The Library participates in OCLC and RLIN, and is committed to follow national cataloging standards. Original cataloging and authority work is done online in GLADIS, the Library's automated processing system and catalog. Bibliographic records are loaded into the OCLC and RLIN systems, and into the University of Californias MELVYL Online Catalog for the nine campuses. Responsibilities: Under the general supervision of the Head of Original Cataloging and the Serials/Electronic/Media Cataloger, performs original cataloging of serials, media, electronic resources and monographs. All original cataloging is performed according to the AACR 2nd, 1998 Revision as interpreted by the Library of Congress, classified using the LC Classification scheme, and provided subject access using the LC Subject Headings. Records are given full MARC tagging. Creates, as necessary, name authority records according to the US MARC authority format. Upgrades, when necessary, incomplete copy. UCB librarians are expected to participate in librarywide planning and governance, to be able to work comfortably in a shared decision-making environment, and to be active professionally. Professional contributions beyond the primary responsibilities, e.g., active participation in university and professional settings, publications or other research and creative activity, are required for advancement in the Librarian series and for appointment to the Associate rank. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions. Qualifications: MLIS from an ALA accredited institution, or equivalent degree. Experience performing original cataloging of serial publications. Familiarity with original cataloging of media, electronic resources and monographs desirable. Working knowledge of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (revision 2), the Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, the Library of Congress classification system, the Library of Congress subject headings and MARC coding. Experience with online cataloging utilities such as OCLC and RLIN. Familiarity with several western European languages. Candidate must have a strong commitment to excellence in service and demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a complex, changing environment.
