Catalog Librarian, Northern Illinois University Libraries
Available August 16, 2001.
Twelve-month, full-time appointment.
Summary of Responsibilities: Performs original and complex copy
cataloging of monographic resources in a wide range of subject areas and
languages. Materials to be cataloged include print, non-print, and
digital formats. Requires knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress
classification and subject headings, authority control, and MARC/OCLC
format.
Assists with cataloging rare books and special collection materials
according to Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Books. Maintains both
national, and local in-house cataloging standards and procedures.
Assists with database maintenance. Supervises, trains, and evaluates
staff. Works with other library faculty members, and functions within a
collegial, consultative environment. Serves as a resource person for
monographic cataloging, and keeps abreast of national standards for
bibliographic control of library materials. Leads or participates in
special projects as assigned. Maintains effective communication with
colleagues, members of the university community, and the general public.
Qualifications Required: An earned MLS degree from an ALA-accredited
program or its equivalent for appointment at instructor rank
(temporary). Additional master's degree required within four years for
eligibility for tenure-track appointment. Recent cataloging experience;
experience with original cataloging and authority control; demonstrated
thorough knowledge and understanding of AACR2R, LCSH and LC
classification, LCRI, and USMARC formats. Ability to communicate
effectively with faculty, staff, students, and general public.
Preferred: Additional master's degree or equivalent required for
appointment at assistant professor rank. Two years' cataloging
experience in an academic library; experience in database maintenance,
cataloging rare books, special collection materials, and electronic
publications; knowledge of metadata; reading knowledge of at least one
foreign language.
