Position: Assistant Acquisitions Librarian, Central Technical Services
Cornell University seeks qualified applicants for the position of Assistant
Acquisitions Librarian in the Central Technical Services Department.
Central Technical Services provides acquisitions, cataloging, authority
control, and database management support within the Cornell University
Library system. Cornell University Library is a leading academic research
library with outstanding collections, service and instructional programs,
and a leader in digital library applications. The Library constitutes a
major university resource for learning, teaching and research, and serves a
faculty of 1,600 and a student body of approximately 19,000. It holds a
distinctive collection of over 6 million volumes in 19 libraries and has a
budget of over $35 million. Supporting this operation are over 200
librarians, archivists and other professional staff, 300 library
assistants, and 150 FTE student employees.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Assistant Acquisitions Librarian assists
the Acquisitions Librarian in the daily supervision and management of the
Acquisitions Service Unit. CTS Acquisitions Services includes over 44 FTE
who manage the acquisitions of library materials regardless of published
format or acquisitions method including firm orders, approval plans,
standing orders, subscriptions, memberships, and government documents. In
addition, these staff are responsible for "fastcataloging" monographic
receipts with available full cataloging copy and for physical processing of
materials on behalf of the libraries that make up the Cornell University
Library system. The Unit also has responsibility for licensing, tracking,
and problem resolution for the Library's electronic resources. The
Assistant Acquisitions Librarian is responsible for writing and maintaining
documentation for staff tasks, overseeing training and evaluating staff
performance, managing projects related to the evaluation and quality
control of acquisitions processes, and investigating opportunities for
workflow enhancements using new technologies.
Requirements: ALA-accredited master's degree in library/information science
or equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated
management skills. Thorough working knowledge of RLIN and/or OCLC systems,
the MARC21 format, and AACR2R. Ability to work independently as well as be
a team member, balance priorities, and meet deadlines in a dynamic work
environment. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written
communication skills with a knowledge of or ability to work with foreign
languages preferred. Previous work experience in technical services or the
publishing industry preferred.
