Bar coding helps me: 1/statistics; 2/identify missing issues when the
barcode is found(patrons think that is what sets off the alarm); 3/avoid
duplications of item records and catch check in errors; 4/make excellent
labels. It is a smooth part of our operation. Our system allows for
rolling the stats to a new item record when the issues are bound.

I have another question about bar coding serials. Our library does not bar
code our serials collection because we do not circulate them. Is there any
other reason for bar coding? Does it help in journal usage statistics?

We barcode our bound volumes but not our unbound issues. We created a
Rolodex file of barcodes for each title with loose issues and scan
internal use of each title. Usage stats were why we created the
inhouse count. We've been doing this for less than a year so it may be
several years before we start looking with a jaundiced eye at some
titles that never come off the shelves.
