Gettysburg College is a highly selective liberal arts college located
ninety minutes from the Baltimore/Washington area. Established in 1832,
the College has a rich tradition, and is located on a 220-acre campus with
an enrollment of approximately 2,300 students.
Head of Technical Services
Gettysburg College seeks a thoughtful, flexible and analytical librarian
with a strong and varied technical services background to lead
acquisitions, cataloging, serials and interlibrary loan. The Technical
Services department (comprised of 2 librarians and 8 FTE support staff) is
dedicated to providing high quality, responsive and cost effective services
to library users. We seek a librarian who is interested in a varied work
environment, looks for leadership opportunities and is attracted to the
possibilities offered by a small and innovative liberal arts environment.
The Head of Technical Services reports to the Director of Library Services
and works with other department heads to plan projects, develop budgets,
design services and analyze workflow. The Head of Technical Services
supervises staff, evaluates their work, sets goals and determines
priorities. S/he will serve as liaison to two or more academic departments.
This important leadership position requires flexibility, dedication to
continuing experimentation with new approaches to technical services and a
commitment to fostering cooperation among library units.
Qualifications: Masters Degree in Library or Information Science from an
ALA-accredited institution and at least four years of professional
experience in academic library technical services. Expertise in at least
one of the following: cataloging, serials control or acquisitions.
Experience with both cataloging and acquisitions and appreciation for the
interrelationships between the two. Supervisory experience with
demonstrated ability to lead a group. Ability to work collaboratively.
Experience in design and maintenance of technical services policies,
procedures and workflow. Knowledge of bibliographic utilities (preferably
Innovative Interfaces). Working knowledge of materials processing, bindery
and preservation. Budgeting, planning, and project management skills. Must
have a mature, flexible working style, abiding interest in people, strong
decision-making abilities and enthusiasm.
