Subject: Union Listing questions from New England

To all:

Nelinet has formed an ad hoc committee to look at the revision of the New
England Union List Guidelines. Three years ago, the then New England
Union List (NEUL) Advisory Committee prepared and presented a white paper
discussing the inclusion of electronic resources in the NEUL. This
current ad hoc committee's charge is to incorporate both documents into a
new set of guidelines for the New England Union List.

To this end, we wondered if we might post a few questions to this group
for your consideration and wisdom. We know that others have already
addressed these issues and are hopeful that we can learn from you.

1. What is the current feeling re: the single vs. separate record idea
for cataloging e-journals? We think that the community has swayed a bit
toward using the single record approach, but want to know for sure. How
has your decision affected your approach to union listing?

2. How have most people decided to handle aggregators vis-a-vis union
listing? Are you taking an approach similar to the approach taken by
libraries who used to use the old microform sets such as Business
Collection published by IAC or are you doing something different?

3. How have you handled staffing and workflow issues around keeping up
with URL changes and aggregators dropping titles?

4. What have you found to be the best way to describe electronic
holdings? Have you used notes only or a combination of notes and
enumeration and chronology? Have you included usage restrictions in the
local data record?

5. How do licensing agreements with individual publishers affect your
decision to union list those titles?

6. If you were asked to, could you prioritize the feeling at your
institution as to the importance of union listing regardless of the format
of the item? The importance of union listing in the world of 3-journals?

We would be interested to know what if anything people have chosen to
include in their union list projects with respect to electronic
publications. We want to be able to keep our union list viable and useful
to all who need to use it and so are grateful for any suggestions you
might want to share.

Please respond directly to me and I will summarize if there is interest.

Thank you all so much for your ideas and input.

Cordially,

Lynn Eaton (on behalf of the Nelinet Ad Hoc committee for the revision of
the NEUL Guidelines)
