Library Director
Mina Rees Library
The Graduate School and University Center
The City University of New York
CUNY Personnel Vacancy Notice No. FY-862
Closing Date: 3/2/01
The Graduate School and University Center of The City
University of New York seeks an innovative Library Director. The
director
must provide vision and leadership in formulating programs and
implementing
strategies to integrate print-based information materials with an
ever-increasing array of digital resources. The Library Director will
support the research and educational needs of faculty and students,
working
in close cooperation with the Vice President for Information Resources.
The Graduate Center, the Ph.D.-granting unit of The City
University of New York, offers exceptional opportunities for working
with
doctoral faculty and students in a stimulating yet intimate academic
setting. With 32 doctoral programs and seven master=s programs, The
Graduate
Center serves over 3500 students. In a unique consortial arrangement,
the
doctoral programs draw upon 1700 doctoral faculty from throughout the
CUNY
system.
Situated in a renovated landmark building in midtown
Manhattan, the new Mina Rees Library has over 276,000 monograph volumes
and
1,640 serials as well as sound recordings, microforms, and subscriptions
to
CD-ROM and Web-accessed digital materials. This small but unusually
interesting collection was developed to serve the needs of graduate
research
programs rather than of undergraduate instruction. The library's home
page,
web.gc.cuny.edu/library, provides links to over 7,000 web sites of
interest
to scholars. CUNY+, the City University=s integrated library system,
includes the on-line catalog of the 20 CUNY libraries located throughout
the
five boroughs as well as some of the digital resources to which CUNY
subscribes. Currently NOTIS-based, CUNY+ will migrate to Ex Libris=
Aleph
500 software by 2002. The library regularly participates in consortial
arrangements, such as licensing of electronic resources, with other CUNY
libraries and with other library organizations in the New York
metropolitan
area.
This tenure-track faculty position bears the CUNY job
title
of Chief Librarian and the rank of professor. The Library Director
reports
to the Provost and Senior Vice President and serves on the CUNY Council
of
Chief Librarians. This is a senior position responsible for the
administration, budgeting, planning, and development of library
information
services. The Chief Librarian will also play a key role in promoting
the
development of digital services university-wide.
Two master=s degrees or a doctoral degree are required
(a
graduate degree in library science is desirable). Also required is a
demonstrated record of effective leadership in administration of an
academic
library, including recruitment and supervision of professional staff,
development and management of the library budget, and mastery of
implementing emerging technologies in service of academic programs.
Salary
commensurate with qualifications and experience. Generous benefits
package.
