Director, Dana Medical Library, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT.

The University of Vermont is nestled in the Champlain Valley between the
Adirondack and Green Mountain ranges.  It is set on a hill overlooking
Lake Champlain and Burlington, Vermont's largest city, and is home to 7470
undergraduates, 1053 graduate students, and 380 medical students. UVM is a
comprehensive research university, receiving more than $70 million
annually in external support for its research and scholarly activities,
and is ranked in the top 120 of 900 universities surveyed for federal
support of research and development in grants and contracts.  The Dana
Medical Library Director’s position is open at a time of exciting growth
in our academic medical center. The Library, currently located in the
medical school, is to be housed in a new health education and ambulatory
health facility. The UVM College of Medicine is also building a new
information system, which will offer sophisticated levels of connectivity
and services for students, faculty and staff. The School of Nursing and
Allied Health has already integrated information systems and long distance
technology into its professional curricula, and is working collaboratively
to further develop these areas in professional education.

In this setting, the Dana Director administers all phases of Library
operations, develops policies, and coordinates planning for services to
the College of Medicine, School of Nursing and Allied Health, Fletcher
Allen Health Care system, and the medical community of the region.
Dana's current budget is $2 million, with 22.5 staff:  8 library faculty
and 14.5 support personnel.  The collection consists of 23,000 monographs,
113,000 periodical volumes, and 1400 active journal subscriptions with
access to 450 electronic journals. The Director reports to the Dean of the
University of Vermont Libraries and serves as a member of the Dean’s
Council.  Dana Library is a member of the Association of Academic Health
Science Libraries, and a resource library in the National Network of
Libraries of Medicine, New England Region.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: ALA-accredited MLS.  Minimum of 7 years'
professional library experience with progressively responsible
administrative assignments in a health sciences library setting.
Demonstrated management, leadership and communication skills.  Creative
and flexible response to managing change.  Ability to provide leadership
in application of new technologies, and information management in the
health sciences. Record of substantial professional achievement.  Strong
commitment to service and affirmative action policies. DESIRABLE
QUALIFICATIONS: academic library experience, life sciences background, MLA
certification, and grant-writing experience.  CANDIDATES are expected to
warrant appointment at rank of Library Associate Professor or Library
Professor (non-tenure track).  Salary $70,000 minimum.  Generous benefits.
TIAA/CREF (or alternative plan).  22 days annual leave.  Review of
