Was the fall/winter issue of Newsweek 17a? I couldn't find any
enumeration on it anywhere.

The Fall/Winter issue of Newsweek (the special issue on babies) put the
volume and issue number (17A) in the masthead in the bottom right corner of
page 3.

I have called enough periodical publishers (journals, magazines, academic,
commercial, whatever) about volume and issue numbers to realize that they
consider enumeration something between an oddity and a nuisance. Most of
them don't really use it and seem genuinely bewildered that it matters to
anyone for any reason. I try to explain about automated library systems and
claiming, but they obviously consider that -- and me -- to be very strange
indeed.

I suppose, having done serials for seven years, that I am! What else is
there for an obssessive-compulsive perfectionist to do that is useful?
(Other than keeping our home video collection in alphabetical order, that
is. If you're on this list, I bet yours are!) (BTW, don't respond to the
list agreeing with that -- would clutter up the list & we all know we're
like that anyway.)
