Cataloging & Metadata Quality Coordinator (Search Extended)
The University of Virginia Library seeks a creative, energetic leader who
will help to shape the future of the Library's cataloging and metadata
endeavors in a dynamic and changing environment. The Quality Control
Coordinator will promote quality in the existing MARC environment and
participate in developing metadata standards for the emerging digital
library. The University Library wishes to attract individuals whose
interest, presence, and contributions will expand our commitment and
ability to serve an increasingly diverse campus population.
Environment: The Library is a leader in developing the digital library,
with electronic centers for texts; digital images, music and media;
geospatial and statistical data; and rare books and manuscripts. The
Library system consists of eleven libraries, with independent libraries for
health sciences, law, and business. The libraries serve 12,000
undergraduates, 6,000 graduate students and 1,600 teaching faculty. The

Jefferson's Academical Village and the historic Grounds provide a gracious
backdrop for teaching, learning, and research.
Responsibilities: The Quality Control Coordinator reports to the Director
of Cataloging Services; coordinates authority control in VIRGO (the
University's online catalog); serves as the NACO (Name Authority
Cooperative project) coordinator for the Library; and coordinates VIRGO
maintenance and enhancement projects. The Coordinator develops authority
control tools and procedures for the Digital Library, working with the
Digital Library Research & Development Dept. to develop prototype and
production methods for standardization of metadata from diverse
sources. The Coordinator creates original cataloging records, and original
non-MARC metadata records, and is a member of the Cataloging Supervisory

Required Qualifications: Master's degree in library science or master's
degree in a related field. Experience with cataloging, authority control,
MARC formats, and automated library systems. Supervisory and/or management
experience. Familiarity with established and emerging metadata standards
(TEI, EAD, Dublin Core, etc.). Effective organizational, communication, and
interpersonal skills. Strong service orientation. Commitment to
professional growth and development. Experience with NACO
desirable. Basic knowledge of one or more foreign languages preferred.
Salary and Benefits: Salary competitive, depending on experience. General
faculty status. The University of Virginia offers excellent benefits,
