Subject: magazine shelving

I oversee the serials collection in a small 2 yr college library. We do not bind our magazines, but we barcode each item and allow students to check magazines out. We are currently moving to a new library and investigating shelving. We will be moving our back issues from closed stacks to open stacks when we move into the new library. Under consideration for purchase are the type of units that have space for the current issue with room for previous issues underneath with space for about 12 issues or so. This system seems like it would work well if all our publications were monthly and we could just specify that the current periodicals area had the current year's worth of magazines and the rest would be found in the back issues area in another part of the library. Unfortunately our periodicals have a wide variety of frequesncies; therefore, for weekly publications like Time, the curre!
nt periodicals area would have a couple months of magazines and for others like Smowmobile which is published 3 times a year, there would be enough room for 4 years worth.

If your library has shelving like we are contemplating, please contace me tgrimm@waukesha.tec.wi.us and let me know what kind of system you use to insure that students know what is housed in current periodicals and what isn't. We have not purchased any shelving yet, so if you prefer to recommend something different, don't hesitate to email me.
Thanks so much for your help.
