The Department is organized into six teams, one of which is Digital Information and Serials Cataloging (DISC). The team is currently staffed by five highly experienced serials and electronic resources catalogers who have cataloged over 10,000 Internet resources. Team members participate in NACO, CONSER Enhance, and OCLC Enhance for book and computer file formats. DISC has lead responsibility for the Shared Cataloging Program, which provides bibliographic records for electronic resources of the California Digital Library and the nine University of California campuses. Catalog Department staff work in a highly automated and networked environment. This position reports to the Head of the Catalog Department. Responsibilities of the Position Serves as Head of Digital Information and Serials Cataloging (supervises one librarian and four high-level professionals) Provides leadership, organization, management, and supervision of DISC Supervises the cataloging of serials and electronic resources (MARC records and non-MARC metadata records) Shares responsibility in Catalog Department management as a member of the Section Heads Group and the Cataloging Committee Provides leadership in developing local cataloging policy and procedures for serials Investigates, experiments with, and implements new approaches for creating and manipulating bibliographic and authority data, including extended and creative uses of metadata Monitors trends and maintains currency in emerging issues in electronic resources cataloging, serial cataloging, and metadata Participates in library committees, task forces, and special projects, particularly those related to cataloging, metadata, and bibliographic control Required Qualifications Professional degree from a library school or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library services Demonstrated successful supervisory experience Experience with Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Library of Congress classification and subject headings (or other thesauri), MARC formats, and automated library systems Familiarity with established and emerging metadata standards (TEI, EAD, Dublin Core, etc.) Ability to excel as a team leader in a dynamic, collaborative, technology-intensive environment Evidence of flexibility and problem-solving skills Demonstrated ability to work well in a changing environment, to work effectively in a large organization, and to exercise creativity and initiative Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills Commitment to professional growth and development Desirable Qualifications Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages Knowledge of NACO and CONSER policies Serials management experience Benefits In addition to a technologically innovative and stimulating environment, UCSD offers a competitive compensation package that includes: choices for medical, dental and optical programs; excellent retirement programs; tax-savings programs; life, automobile and short/long-term disability insurance; relocation reimbursement; outstanding recreational facilities; innovative training programs; generous professional development funding; and on-campus childcare.
