Dear Maija,
This is cataloging from the Library of Congress. LC has a very large
collection of almanacs that are being cataloged by earliest entry with title
variations. Early almanacs pose many problems in cataloging: frequent changes
in title, imprint, etc. Some libraries, such as the American Antiquarian
Society, have cataloged these as monographs using DCRB, the cataloging rules
for rare books. Early American almanacs are listed in Evans, Shaw & Shoemaker
and/or Drake and can be easily referenced in a 510 note.
Juliet McLaren (ESTC Project, UC Riverside) and I are working on a draft of a
rare serials cataloging manual under the auspices of the Bibliographic
Standards Committee of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of ACRL. The
draft is at:
http://www.library.yale.edu/conser/documents/dcrs.html
We would really like to have you, or anyone else on the list, read and
comment.

Hello Maija,
Someone forwarded your e-mail to me since I cataloged the very
record you included. There is a Rule Interpretation (RI 21.2C,
paragraph 4 (17th-19th Century U.S. almanacs) that covers the
situation. The note: Title history, was devised to cover all the title
changes of an almanac, because it was judged that it would be too
trying to create successive entries requiring multiple qualifyers for
these title changes, as hundreds of these almanacs have a similar
title.
I hope this will be of help!

Subject: "Title history" in Rare Book Cataloging
In our retrospective conversion efforts, we've come across a few serial
records that use a 500 note Title history which lists all the title
variations that the serial (often an almanac) has had in its lifetime. The
variant titles also appear in separate 246 fields. For an example of this
type of cataloging, see OCLC#14764325 which I've copied below. The record
was authenticated by a CONSER library. If this is the proper way to
catalog rare book collection serials, could somebody tell me where to find
the documentation?
