Subject: Tech Services Course
This fall, the Palmer School of Library and Information Science is offering a
new course on Technical Services at its Manhattan Campus. The course will
address current issues in the areas of acquisitions, cataloging, serials, and
circulation. Some specific topics will be outsourcing, strategies for
processing materials in new formats such as ejournals and ebooks, and document
delivery and ILL in an electronic environment. Many types of information
organizations will be considered and the role of technical services in
fulfilling the mission of the institution will be emphasized.
This course has been designed for senior master's students and for
professionals in the field who are directly involved with technical services
functions or who would benefit from an understanding of this critical area of
library operations.
The instructor is Rick Block, Head of Original and Special Materials
Cataloging at Columbia University. Mr. Block is the chair of the ALA
Commercial Technical Services Committee. He developed and led a session
entitled, "Evaluating the Outsourcing of Technical Services" at the 2000 ALA
conference in Chicago.
