The Tenth International Conference of Science Editors - IFSE-Rio -, to be
held on August 27-30, 2000, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will
welcome Ellis Rubinstein who will deliver the opening conference "How is
science being communicated?"

Ellis Rubinstein is the editor of Science, one of the most important
science magazine throughout the world. His notable experience in the
scientific publishing field and his ideas will help us to understand the
development and the revolution in how scientific information is being
communicated today. At IFSE-Rio, Rubinstein will speak about how
scientists and publishers are facing the challenge of the new capacities
of digital information distribution, and how scientific knowledge will
become available to the public in an unprecedented broad and deep way.

As the keynote theme for all the discussions that will follow the IFSE-Rio
opening conference, Ellis Rubinstein's presentation will discuss the
problems and perspectives these new means bring to the producers of
scientific information, and to those who use it. Among other conferences
and panels, there will be issues such as the present and future of
scientific communication, peer review, international databases
experiences, and evaluation of scientific journals, which will be
delivered by renowned specialists such as Stevan Harnad (University of
Southampton UK), Miriam Balaban (President IFSE Italy), W. Wayt Gibbs
(Scientific American USA), Neil Pakenham-Walsh (INASP UK), Charles
Pessanha (Dados: Revista de Ciencias Sociais Brazil), Lynette Hunter
(Sociological Abstracts USA), James Testa and Nancy K. Bayers (ISI USA),
Gary VandenBos and Linda Beebe (PsycINFO USA).
