Position Title:     Head, Serials Acquisitions Unit, Resource Services

JOB SUMMARY:

The Head of the Serials Acquisitions Unit will be responsible for the
management of all serials acquisitions functions and the acquisition of
library electronic resources. As such, the individual supervises and
evaluates the activities of the Serials Acquisitions unit. The unit
includes 7.5 support staff that acquire, claim, check-in, binding, and
fiscally manage serials in all formats. Serves as the electronic
acquisitions expert for licensing, ordering, receiving, housing, and
coordinating access that further integrates electronic serials into the
collections.  Also monitors and analyzes vendor performance, prepares
budget reports. Coordinates and implements projects associated with the
Humanities and Social Sciences Periodicals Room.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  Responsible for supervision and operation of the Serials Acquisitions
Unit. This includes planning and goal setting; monitoring and evaluating
workflow for quality and quantity of production; hiring and evaluating
staff; coordinating training.

2.  Responsible for management of electronic resources acquisitions,
licenses, coordinating access to electronic resources once acquired with
Electronic Access Services Coordinator and staff in Serials Cataloging,
Preservation, Collection Management, Administration, and Public Services.
Provides support for management of established licenses and contracts,
license compliance, and record keeping for digital information.

3.  Responsible for ensuring quality control in acquisitions by monitoring
serial vendor services. Perform vendor evaluations and facilitate
negotiations of vendor services as needed. Prepare regular budget reports.

4.  With the Department Chair, Section Associate Chair and Serials
Cataloging Unit Head establishes policies and procedures that coordinate
acquisitions and cataloging tasks with national standards and local policy
and procedures.  As chair of the Serials Operational Committee,
coordinates standards and procedures for serials receipt in branches and
HSS Periodicals Room.

5.  Contributes to the development of departmental and library goals,
policies, procedures, and priorities by working with a variety of groups
and various assignments, and by drafting suggestions or responses to
in-process documents.

6.  Leads staff in developing publication patterns for system migration to
predictive check-in.

7.  Participates in staffing the Humanities and Social Sciences
Periodicals Room information desk. Leads planning for further support of
Humanities and Social Sciences Periodicals.

8.  Participates in and contributes to acquisitions programs and standards
on national level.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.  Master's degree in library science from an ALA accredited library
school.

2.  Direct knowledge of and experience in serials management in a
networked academic library environment. Knowledge of state-of-the art
serials control systems and technology, sufficient to participate actively
in planning for migration to a new library system.

3.  Familiarity with serials trade, serials holdings standards, metadata
standards, current trends in serials control.

4.  Demonstrated supervisory and training and problem-solving skills.

5.  Experience and facility with basic office software.

6.  Excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to work
effectively, both as part of a team and individually, with faculty, staff
and students.

7.  Strong analytical skills and experience in planning, setting
priorities, and problem solving.

8.  Proven commitment to professional growth and development.

9.  Working knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
