Here at Idaho State Library, we put the date in the following locations
for all periodicals.

Title page
if no title page then the contents page
if no title page, the front cover is the contents page and the cover is slick,
then the first page of the periodical that is not an advertisement.
That is our policy on stamping, we have cut down on the smudges and have a
centralized place for the date.

Good luck

Does anyone have a solution for stamping periodicals. On the many
glossy covered titles we receive, our current stamp smears beyond
recognition on the covers. Are there any stamping options that are
"non-smear", or do you have any other suggestions for how we can better
mark our periodicals?

TIA

We attach a small, blank label (1" X 1/2") on glossy pages and stamp
whatever indentifier we need onto the label.

On titles with very shiny (e.g., smear-prone) or very dark covers, we stamp
the first inside page that is light enough for the stamp to be seen.

Our stamps smear, too. We usually stamp the first white or light-colored page inside the cover.

Hi Ravi,

I can give you 2 options that we use:

1. We do not stamp directly on the cover - we stamp on non-shiny stickers
that we put on the cover. This is true for the date of arrival of the
   issue and other details.

2. As to the library's name/identification - we ordered barcodes with the
name of our library already on them. So when we put the barcode (on each
and every issue that is checked in) - the library's name is already
   there.

I hope this helps.

Our solution is to stick a label on the glossy cover and to stamp on
the label.

I hope this helps,

I would be interested in responses. At the UConn Libraries we
encounter smearing on glossy covers but also dark-colored or *busy*
multi-colored covers present stamping problems as well. Our only
solution to date has been to stamp on the verso of the cover. If
that, too, is a dark color (which sometimes is the case) we go to the
next page.

Ravi:
Our printing department within the university makes up property stickers
for us. They have pre-printed: the name of the library, name of the
university and a line for the date to be stamped. Anyother information you
need could be pre-printed on there as well. This then has a backing that
can be peeled away so the sticky side can be attached to the front cover.
Do you think it's possible that you would have such a department at your
university??

Here at Kresge we have, on occasion, placed two spine labels next

stamped inside.
        Hope that helps.

For covers that are too glossy to hold the ink, or are otherwise too
dark to see the property stamp, we put a 1-1/4" x 1-3/4" white label
on the cover and stamp that.

We stamp our journals on the title page. Because with binding often times
the covers are removed, and we do not maintain our checkin records on our
ILS forever. So it gives us a record of when the issue was received.
Periodically we get questions about date of receipt because of patent
disputes. I hope this is helpful.

Ravi,
We have given up on glossy covers and now stamp those magazines on the table
of contents or first page of the journal. Even if the pages are glossy the
ink doesn't seem to rub off as easily.

Ravi -

The system I inherited involved stamping non-glossy periodicals, and using
paper labels on glossy ones. We originally stamped the paper labels, but
have since switched to computer-printed labels.

Hope this helps!

What we do is print out our library's name one stickers using our laser
printer and then just put these on the cover. The extra cost in the
stickers and printing is more than made up in the ease of use and the
'non-smear' factor. This is the first thing I changed when I became the
serials librarian here. The labels we use our Avery Return Address Labels
for Laser Printers (#5267).
