JSTOR User Services Interface Support Librarian
Background
JSTOR (www.jstor.org) is an independent not-for-profit organization which
is creating a growing digital archive of core scholarly journals. The
JSTOR User Services unit is serving a rapidly expanding international user
community of institutions and individuals through a wide range of
activities, such as initiating access for new participants, providing
direct user support, creating support materials, and ongoing interface
development. JSTOR has three office locations: New York, NY; Princeton,
NJ; and Ann Arbor, MI. JSTOR User Services librarians are located in the
Ann Arbor JSTOR office, and are affiliated with the School of Information
at the University of Michigan.
Basic Function and Responsibility
The primary responsibilities of the Interface Support Librarian will be to
enhance the presentation and display of the JSTOR database, maintain the
accuracy of its informational contents, and implement new interface
features to improve the overall user experience. This Librarian will also
be responsible for gathering and compiling data to support interface
development and User Services activities, and will play an integral
support role in the User Services unit as it expands its activities to
encompass new audiences and new access models.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Interface Maintenance and Design 40%
Refine and maintain accuracy of online informational ("About" and "Help")
pages. Gather and organize feedback from users, conduct usability studies,
correspond with and query JSTOR users as needed. Work extensively with
User Services and technical staff to explore ways of implementing
suggested improvements. As an extension of this work, refine and carry out
testing processes that will ensure that software and content releases meet
JSTOR quality standards.
User Support Activities 30%
Create handouts and other resource materials. Maintain and enhance online
librarian resource pages. Assist User Services Coordinator with
preparations for training and workshops. Maintain the User Services
participant database and implement new features as warranted by new
support activities. Respond to user queries as needed. Maintain listservs.
Usage Analysis 20%
Monitor levels and types of usage. Work with participant contacts to
ensure that use of the database is fair and meets JSTOR's "Terms and
Conditions of Use." Analyze usage statistics and report on implications
for interface development and for User Services support activities.
Misc. Activities 10%
Maintain and enhance the User Services section of the JSTOR intranet.
Represent the User Services unit on relevant organization-wide working
groups.
Required Qualifications
1. Masters in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited
institution.
2. Minimum of 1-2 years experience (professional or pre-professional) in
a digital environment, including experience with web page design and
information architecture.
3. High-level computer skills, demonstrated proficiency with a wide range
of computer platforms, internet tools, and presentation and design
software.
4. Excellent oral and written communication skills, outstanding
interpersonal skills, and a service-based orientation.
5. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
6. Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work
independently.
Desired Qualifications
1. Experience using FileMaker Pro, Adobe Illustrator and Acrobat
software.
2. Experience working in a UNIX environment.
Salary, Benefits, and Rank
$32,000 minimum. 24 days vacation per year, comprehensive health
insurance, life insurance, TIAA/CREF. The incumbent will have the rank of
Assistant Librarian. Librarians at the University of Michigan are
non-tenured faculty members.
