NOTICE OF VACANCY
February 15, 2000
TITLE: Head, Monographic Acquisitions Section
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Head of the Monographic Services Division, manages
Monographic Acquisitions Section, provides system-wide leadership in
monographic acquisitions, monitors national acquisitions and publishing
trends, and serves as primary contact with monographs vendors. Leads
automation developments in acquisitions and participates in overall
planning for the integrated library system (Innovative Interfaces).
Manages quick cataloging on receipt. Supports digital initiatives
program.
Serves on the division's management team and participates in
development,
implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures, and initiatives.
Works closely with Collection Management, Serials Services, and
selectors
throughout the Libraries.
Monographic Acquisitions encompasses preorder searching, ordering,
claiming, receiving, quick cataloging, invoicing, gifts processing, and
marking. Staff scan and provide metadata of image collections for
digital
projects. Acquisitions functions are primarily centralized and support a
multi-campus and multi-branch library. The section has a staff of 17
FTE,
places 28,000 orders and receives 50,000 volumes per year. The
Libraries'
overall annual resources budget is greater than $8 million and the
collection size is approaching 6 million volumes.
This position will provide leadership for ongoing review of the
section's
organization and will participate in cutting edge digital projects. The

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information
studies
degree.
2. Three years post-MLS experience in acquisitions and substantial
knowledge of the domestic and foreign book trade.
3. Knowledge of a Western European language.
4. Experience with an integrated library system and bibliographic
utilities. Familiarity with cataloging practices.
5. Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and
analytical
skills.
6. Supervisory experience and ability to work effectively with
individuals
and groups. Ability to function well in a changing environment, work
effectively within a large organization, and exercise initiative in a
collaborative framework.
7. Demonstrated commitment to professional development and service.
Preferred:
1. Experience in a large academic research library.
2. Experience with metadata and digital library projects.
SALARY: $45,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with
qualifications and background.
BENEFITS: Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the
University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard
Group,
SAFECO Mutual Funds and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis.
Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave
at
the rate of 12 working days per year. Excellent medical, dental and
life
insurance plans. No state or local income tax.
