Vol. numbering with zeros Roberta Winjum 14 Jan 2000 23:54 UTC

I wish this were my worst problem, but at any rate, I would appreciate
some help from Serialisters on how to deal with the following Y2K problem
related to vol. numbering of analytic records for classed together series:

When the last two digits of the year are part of the vol. numbering for
issues in a series, we get vol. numbering such as: no. 00-01. This causes
some problems for sorting and, eventually, for shelving.

Example of call number browse from our OPAC:

Hawaii. Legislature. UHM See full record 2000
   Sunset evaluation report : social workers : a re HJ9840.5 .A26a no.00-02

Hawaii. Office of th UHM See full record 1980
Sunset evaluation report : Board of Examiners fo HJ9840.5 .A26a no.80-1
...
Hawaii. Legislature. UHM See full record 1999
Audit of temporary and emergency staffing of sta HJ 9840.5 .A26a no.99-23

The zero vol. designations file first, so the highest vol. number now files
as the earliest. As the years wear on, if the publisher doesn't change the
numbering, we could eventually have dupl. vol. numbers and shelving
conflicts, e.g., no. 10-01 (= 1910, no. 1) and no. 10-01 (= 2010, no. 1)

Any suggestions? How have some of you solved this problem?

Thanks,
Roberta Winjum
